The Capstan project is a multi-use residential development that promises to transform the urban landscape of Richmond. Featuring a community centre, retail spaces, a public plaza, and a new SkyTrain station, Capstan aims to create a distinctive sense of place within its new neighbourhood. The concept behind this ambitious development was born from a collaborative effort between myself, the City of Richmond, developers, architects, landscape designers, and public art consultants. At the heart of the project is an iconic sign designed to serve as a landmark visible from the SkyTrain, adding to the project's allure and recognizability. The concept development faced challenges due to its small footprint and specific sightlines, and the sign stands proudly at a height of 30 feet, symbolizing the project's bold aspirations and community-centric vision.

In partnership with an engineer, I took the initial concept and meticulously developed it into a fully realized design ready for production. The process involved sourcing specific materials and hardware that would ensure the structure's durability without compromising its sleek and minimal aesthetic. The final product is not just visually striking but also built to last, reflecting a harmonious blend of form and function. This design project is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation, showcasing how thoughtful urban planning and design can create landmarks that resonate with the community and enhance the overall aesthetic of the cityscape.
